Birch Haven Resort is in Itasca County. Itasca County, with a population of approximately 43,000, is located in north central Minnesota.

Birch Haven is located in Balsam Township. The total area of Balsam is 83.3 miles squared and has a population of only 553 as of the year 2000.                                                 

Balsam Township was chartered in 1907, and settlers were drawn to the area by the availability of land when it went up for sale by the logging industry. First settlers were mainly people from the American Midwest. Forty years later, Scenic Highway 7 was the only black-topped road in the area. Electricity made it's way to the community in 1946.
